5 Prayers for Your Husband

If you’ve been keeping up to date on my social media, you’ll notice that my top reel right now is about how you can be praying for your husband in 5 different ways! If I’m being honest, I kind of put that all together on a whim. But after posting, I realized how little I pray for my own husband.

Being encouraged from a sermon I heard not too long ago, I thought I would put these 5 prayers I encouraged others to pray into action by writing them out myself in detail. Please know that this is not a holier-than-thou approach I’m taking, but rather one that is for the simple purpose of taking time to carefully think out my prayers (because often, I don’t) - in hope that it would bring encouragement to wives who are looking for meaningful ways to pray for their own husbands. But before I start getting into the prayers, I’d love to share with you some notes from the sermon regarding answered prayer.

Many believe that there is power in prayer - and there is - but many also don’t realize that that power has a source: God and God alone! Understanding this, we come to 4 conditions of having our prayers answered:

  1. You must have faith (John 14:12; Mark 11:24)

  2. Pray in Jesus’ name (John 14:13; 1 John 2:1; James 4:2-3) - It is for His sake; Jesus Christ is the only mediator between us and the Father - We have no claim over what God must do

  3. Our prayers are meant to enable the Son to bring glory to the Father (John 14:13; John 17:4)

    1. Prayer is so that God would get something from us (glory), not the other way around

    2. His glory over our comfort!

  4. Obedience = our relationship with God strengthens (John 14:15) Prayers must align with His will in His Word by people living in His will through Christ (1 John 5:14)

Now, let’s pray...

Lord God,

Thank you for your amazing sacrifice. Your love could not have been made clearer through the shedding of Christ’s blood. I don’t deserve your immense grace, but you have chosen me. And because of your mercy, I ask that you help me to lift you high; may it be said about my life that I aim to exalt your name more than my own. Help me to reveal you in every area of my life, especially in my position as a wife. Thank you for this incredible gift and these moments I get to treasure with my husband.

Stronger Heart for Jesus Each Day

Lord, use my husband for your glory. May he cherish the things of you and honour you well by dedicating his time in your Word, in prayer, and in fellowship. I pray that in these disciplines and more that you will grow his heart and help him to desire you more.

Fruitful Leadership

Please work in my husband so that he may reveal fruit in his life and in how he leads me. I ask that my husband would be attentive to the Spirit and would apply your teachings. Thank you, Jesus, for being the ultimate leader. May my husband follow in your footsteps and may the outcome of that be honouring to you. Encourage him to challenge me in my walk with you, and I pray that I would do the same for him. Help him to be intentional with how he leads me and how he follows you.

Healthy Mentorship

I also praise you for the Christ-loving church we attend. Thank you for surrounding us with a community of believers who aim to bring glory to you in their lives. I pray that you would soon bring (or thank you that you have brought) a man who is after your heart to guide my husband. May my husband desire to have this kind of relationship. May he be seeking (or continue to seek) opportunities to connect with older and younger men, so that they may sharpen one another and build each other up in their faith.

Seeking Treasures in Heaven

God, this world is so easy to get distracted in. May you protect my husband from seeking pleasure, satisfaction, and fulfillment in the things around him. I pray that you would be his only Idol. Keep his eyes and heart on you, O God. Forgive me also if I have given him a reason to worship things - or even his own wife - other than you. May you lead both my husband and I to acknowledge you as our only true prize.

Discipleship Obedience

Lord, you say in your Word to make other disciples (Matthew 28:19), and I ask that you would move within my husband to do so. It’s easy to fear rejection, but I pray he wouldn’t. May he not waver in his faith. Help him to be bold and confident with love towards the people he shares the gospel with. I also pray that he would be bold and confident in knowing the gospel. May he learn it and know it in his heart, and be living it out. Help him to recall your great mercy, understanding his own unworthiness before you, and be excited to share his testimony with others. Thank you for saving my husband and reserving a place for him in your kingdom.

I pray this in Jesus’ name,

Amen.
