CALL US BORING, but for our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple, Jonah and I have promised not to get each other anything! From day one, our love language started with quality time. Gifts are a great and loving gesture, but they don’t always need to come at a price! Here are just a few simple gift ideas (that don’t cost anything or much at all!) that I think every couple should enjoy on Valentine’s Day…

Breakfast in Bed

It’s a small gift, but a huge gesture! And not only is it a gift for one, but two! What’s better than starting the day with your husband or wife eating in bed?

Picnic in the Park OR at Home

Depending on where you live, this may not be so ideal… but consider decorating your living room or dining room with plants and picnic-like decor! This gift may come with a lot of creativity (if you’re unable to attend the park), but it makes a lunch (or “brunch”) worthwhile!

Candle-Lit Dinner

This is probably the most cliche and common gift of all, but with these kind of gifts, you can make it your own! Jonah and I are trying a candle-lit dinner on the floor near our fireplace - and I’m so excited! And the dinner won’t be fancy either; we plan to order Pizza Pizza!

Bake a V-Day Treat

Put those baking skills to the test and make a delicious gift for your significant other! For this Valentine’s Day, I'm making a vegan treat (known as Jammy Dodgers), and Jonah loves them. Not only do they make his stomach happy, but knowing that I’m not a person who loves to bake, his heart is just as satisfied.

Take a Coin Trip

I completely forget where I learned this idea from, but I’ve always wanted to try it! The Coin Trip is specifically for spontaneous couples who love adventure. What you do is hop in the car and take as many coins as you wish to take (I would start with 25). When you come to a stop (whether a stop sign or a red light), the passenger is to take a coin and flip it. If it lands on heads, take a left. If it lands on tails, take a right. Once all of the coins have been flipped, take a look at the location you’re in and make a date out of it. Know that this gift requires preparation; bring anything you can think of with you - blankets, food, you name it - and make sure your car is filled with gas before you go!

PS. you can flip the coins before taking the trip, just mark it down as you flip and follow your directions!

THESE GIFTS MAY BE MORE ON THE AFFORDABLE SIDE, but they do come at a cost - and that is your time and effort; something to be admired and cherished by your loved one on Valentine’s Day. But I want to challenge you to take this initiative often, not just on this special holiday. For “whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24). Make Valentine’s Day a special day, but make it like any other day, serving our Lord and Saviour by loving your significant other through and through.
